Goals: This module aims provide a short introduction to Elite studies in comparative politics and to discuss the recent literature in the field, with a particular focus on the European scenario.
Six topics in particular will be covered:
Reading seminars will be alternated to tutorial and laboratories. Students will be asked to prepare one to three “core readings” each meeting, to start the discussion

Goals: This module aims provide a short introduction to Elite studies in comparative politics and to discuss the recent literature in the field, with a particular focus on the European scenario.
Six topics in particular will be covered:
- the emergence of the field of elite studies and its relevance for the analysis of democratic polities and, more in general, in the development of comparative politics and political sociology. Elite formation and Elite circulation
- The transformation of the field of elite studies in America and in Europe during the XX century. Social vs. political elites.
- The analysis of “positional study of political elites”: social profiles, modes of selection and career patterns of contemporary ruling elites in Europe
- The analysis of “attitudinal study of political elites”: role orientation, normative values and the question of the elite-mass gap.
- The study of the processes of elite selection and leader selection in the contemporary democracies
- Methodological issues in the study of contemporary political elites. Studying the elites via political discourse, documentary data, social media.
